Oral history interview with Claude Edge, 1982 March 21.

Interview with Claude Edge concerning his experiences as one of the founders of Lilly Ice Cream Company in Bryan, Texas. Edge discusses his family background, teaching in Pioneer, Texas, his employment as principal of a Jacksboro, Texas public school, his work in an ice plant in Commerce, Texas, and his partnership in the Lilly ice cream business in Navasota, Texas in 1927. He also talks about the ice cream-making process, the sale and marketing of ice cream, the addition of a butter production plant in 929, business unprofitability from 1929 to 1932, and the move of the business to Bryan in 1932. Edge shares his views on governmental regulations of the dairy business, the competition from the Double Dip Ice Cream Company in 1938, the expansion of the plant in 1938, the effects of the Depression on business, the origin of the Melorine product, and the sale of the business in 1968. He also shares his views on competitors and speaks about his civic activities, his work with International Executives Services Corporation, and the development of a successful business.
